MOTION NO. 6
MOTION: Councillor G. O'Connell
That the Manager responsible provides a report on the maintenance of Waterstown Park year to date and to include a. grass cutting, b. hedges and trees and c. waterways.
REPORT:
Grass cutting: The map attached to this report identifies Areas A, B & C which are considered to be the most species rich wildflower areas. The grass in Area A was cut in May and arisings were removed off site. It is intended to carry out a second cut of this area in the coming weeks. This is subject to ground conditions being suitable for machinery.
As a result of Area B not being cut in recent years the diversity of this habitat is diminishing and undesirable species are starting to colonise this area. To address this issue, it is proposed to cut a small section of Area B in the coming weeks and remove undesirable species such as self-seeded brambles and Crataegus. The section in question is outlined in green on the map and referred to as B1. Works in this area are subject to ground conditions being suitable for machinery.
Hedges: Apart from routine maintenance there are no plans to undertake significant pruning works in the park this year.
Waterways: There are no works planned for the waterways in the current year.
Other maintenance and upgrade works carried out in the park in 2020 included the provision of a new entrance gate at Waterstown Avenue. This involved the replacement of the barriers with ornamental gates in keeping with the park.
