COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN/PALMERSTON/NORTH CLONDALKIN AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 5
MOTION: Councillor L. O'Toole
As we continue to design and implement cycle ways / lanes in our county including the Lucan, Adamstown, Grange castle and newer developments in Clonburris, we have seen evidence of an increase in cycling and more recently during lockdown due to covid restrictions, Cycling has become a preferred mode of transport to public transport.
The cleansing of cycle lanes has become a challenge. Removal of debris, broken glass, damaged shores, overgrown briars, damage from burnt out vehicles etc is a regular request received from the public including cyclists and in some instances removing cyclists from our cycle lanes for some time.
This committee requests that the Chief Executive introduce a cycle lane cleansing schedule programme, similar to the road sweeping programme. To also include a report on the machinery currently owned by the council to cleanse the cycle lanes, how many per area, and when we last invested in new machinery.
REPORT:
The cleaning of on-road cycle lanes is carried out as part of the road sweeping contract which is currently held by Oxygen Environmental Ltd. The cleaning of off-road cycle lanes is carried using a hired mini sweeper which is operated by Public Realm staff out of Corkagh Depot. Cycle lanes on the N4 are maintained by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
Vegetation/hedges growing on public lands adjacent to cycle lanes are maintained by the Public Realm Section and pruned during the winter pruning period. Where vegetation encroaches outside of the pruning season this is attended to as it arises. Vegetation encroaching on cycle lanes which is growing on private property is managed by the Roads Maintenance Section. The Roads Maintenance Section also manage the infrastructure of the cycle lanes eg. shores.
The cleansing of cycle lanes within the county is currently being examined with a view to addressing any shortfalls that may be apparent.
