MOTION NO. 17

MOTION: Councillor M. Johansson

That the Chief Executive produce an update on the gatekeeper's lodge and that this committee supports the proposal that it be used by Ronanstown Youth Service for outdoor activities on the canal.

REPORT:

The sustained increase in incidents of anti-social behaviour along the Grand Canal over the course of a number of months, led to the structured engagement of the various statutory and relevant agencies. A number of specific actions were identified some of which have been implemented and others are ongoing. This has improved matters but concerns remain and further actions including the conversion of the Gatekeepers Cottage into a water sports facility were discussed and remain open to progression.

Waterways Ireland who own the property have proposed a site visit for the agencies to a similar facility along a stretch of the Royal Canal near Binns Bridge which has been successful in bringing positive activity to the area as well as providing a resource for local youths and the wider community. This was deferred due to Covid 19 but arrangements will be made to reschedule as soon as feasible.
