QUESTION NO. 3
QUESTION: Councillor Liam Sinclair
To ask the Chief Executive following the loss of anchor tenants in The Square and considering its importance to the planning for Tallaght Town Centre, what supports are the council providing to ensure new anchor tenants can be attracted?
REPLY:
The recently adopted Tallaght Town Centre Local Area Plan provides policy support for the consolidation and enhancement of the Square and surrounding area as a retail focal point for the County. The potential for redevelopment of lands surrounding the Square for residential development is recognised in the LAP, which would enable the development of a more mixed-use town centre. The objective to develop a transport interchange integrating Luas, bus, cycle & taxi on lands adjacent to the Square will further consolidate its importance as a hub for public transport and enhance accessibility by all means of sustainable transport to the Square.
All sectors (including retail) have been supported to meet the exceptional challenges they have faced due to the COVID 19 pandemic. The focus of the Government and its Agencies has primarily been on supporting businesses and protecting existing jobs in the county as the various sectors re-open.
Communications have and continue to take place on a weekly basis and virtual meetings are held by the Department Enterprise Trade and Employment together with Local Enterprise Office representatives and guest agencies. These meetings have on occasion been attended by Minister Humphries in the past government and more recently by Minister Damien English.
All business support measures in South Dublin County, both our existing local schemes and the National supports will continue to be deployed to maximise support for business in the County in the current crisis. South Dublin Countyl Council also works closely with South Dublin Chamber in this regard.
