MOTION NO. 6

MOTION: Councillor P. Gogarty

That the Council take measures to deal with an upsurge in anti-social behaviour and related litter at [the green space beside the pedestrian walkway into Castle Riada Drive nearest the Penny Hill] as local residents are fed up having to clean this up constantly themselves and phone the Gardaí on a regular basis and are suggesting closing off this permeability access or trimming back the hedgerow to waist height; and, if necessary, could a Covid-friendly site meeting be arranged if necessary to discuss this matter on the ground.

REPORT:

The Public Realm Section have carried out works at this location in the past to deal with anti-social problems. Works have included the removal of shrubbery at the south end of the open space adjacent to Castle Riada Drive. A section of hedge approximately 47 metres long was also removed from either side of the Castle Road pedestrian entrance to the open space. Following on from this work, a 17-metre section of hedge along the boundary of the open space was reduced in height. Works on the hedges was carried in consultation with the residents to increase visibility of the open space and reduce cover for anti-social activities. The Public Realm would be amenable to carrying out further pruning works on the open space during the winter pruning season. To identify the areas where pruning is required, it would be useful if contact details could be forwarded to Senior Executive Parks Superintendent to facilitate discussion.
