QUESTION NO. 19

QUESTION: Councillor L. O'Toole

Could the Chief Executive provide an update regarding the Dublin canvass project that has taken place over the last year. how many boxes have been painted by artists and how many artists were involved. Also advise if this is to continue.

REPLY:

Following on from the successful role out of the South Dublin Canvas project in 2018 and 2019, South Dublin County Council continues to use traffic light control boxes to exhibit high quality, creative artwork to the public. Traffic light control boxes make perfect canvases to showcase community art as they are always naturally located in high footfall – high traffic areas. The artwork can be enjoyed by pedestrians, cyclist and motorists as they wait for the traffic light to turn green.

In 2018 36 boxes throughout the county were painted by local artists. In 2019 23 were painted.

A budget was secured to continue the project in 2020 and the callout for submissions was launched on Monday 25th May 2020. The deadline for submissions is Friday 19th June and the selection process is scheduled to run from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th June.

This year 17 locations across South Dublin County Council were included in the call out. The locations are:

Tallaght South

Templeogue/Terenure

Rathfarnham

Tallaght Central

Lucan

Clondalkin

All artwork is due to be complete by the end of September 2020.
