MOTION: Councillor P. Gogarty
That the Chief Executive actively supports the initiative by the Young Social Innovators group in St Joseph's College and facilitates the provision of clearly labelled pilot recycling bin arrays (non-recyclable, dry recyclable and compostable waste) bins at the bus stops adjacent to the school entrance and at a suitable location near the village green in Lucan; to meet with a delegation of students if necessary to discuss such a rollout; and, if financing is an issue, to provide a breakdown of costs that allow the pilot to be carried out for a period of a year so that students can fundraise if necessary for the bins; and if a statement can be made on the matter.
REPORT:
South Dublin County council will undertake a detailed review of this proposal in the light of the following:
- Examination of the proposed location to determine its capacity to facilitate safe access for maintenance vehicles.
- Identification of the type of recycling bin arrays with a combination of non-recyclable, dry recyclable and compostable waste compartments that are of attractive and robust design.
- Size of the recycling bin arrays.
- Cost of the recycling bin arrays in comparison to the existing litter bins to determine whether they can be provided in the most cost-effective manner and are fit for purpose.
South Dublin county council welcomes the idea of this project being run on a pilot basis and is willing to meet with the Young Social Innovators group in St Joseph’s College.
