Cycle South Dublin
Background
The delivery of a robust cycle network is a key priority for South Dublin County Council.
The benefits of a cycle network that enables people of all ages to cycle for both work and leisure are well documented and evidenced.
South Dublin County Council has been investing in the design and delivery of cycle infrastructure across the County and in recent years has delivered improved cycle infrastructure in several locations including alongside delivery of the Outer Ring Road, the R120 extension and at Bawnogue.
The Council is currently on-site with new cycle infrastructure projects in the Dodder Valley, along Monastery Road in Clondalkin and as part of the new Belgard North Link Road in Tallaght Town Centre. There are also an increasing number of Council-own projects in the feasibility and design stages.
Purpose of this briefing note
SDCC recognises that much more can be done to bolster the delivery and design of enhanced cycle infrastructure. The purpose of this note is to set out the Council’s aspirations and to seek early views from the SPC to help shape the emerging proposals, draft vision, mission, objectives, process and timescales as set out below.
Vision
- For South Dublin to become Ireland’s most cycle friendly County.
Mission
- To enable all people in the County to cycle, by delivering a coordinated programme of investment in cycle infrastructure, education, training and promotion to help connect the County.
Objectives
- A network of routes that connects key centres and destinations for both commuters and leisure users
- A safe and accessible network for people of all ages (segregated where possible)
- A well-maintained network
- A credible 5-year programme of works that is funded, prioritised and deliverable
- A programme of education and promotional works to encourage more people to cycle
- Has public and political support
Process
- Compile a baseline of existing infrastructure, Part 8s and schemes that are in design
- Agree vision, mission and objectives
- Set out the preferred programme of works for the next 5-years
- Secure support (political, NTA and stakeholders eg local businesses, Dublin Cycle Campaign)
- Secure funding approval from the NTA and SDCC
- Progress work to design, build, educate and promote our work
Timescales
- February 2020: SPC briefing
- Q1 & Q2 2020: Agree programme and secure funding support
- June 2020: Launch Cycle South Dublin programme at Bike Week
- Q3+ Procure and commence design of infrastructure and plan for delivery
