MOTION NO. 16

MOTION: Councillor P. Gogarty

That the Chief Executive redresses the historic shortage of community and commercial spaces in the Lucan, North Clondalkin and Palmerstown areas that was in the past exacerbated by bad planning such as material contraventions, by proactively liaising with sports clubs and performing arts groups, whether voluntary or business-related, to identify and support the provision of much needed additional space, either through planning reviews or the provision of suitable sites on Council land; and if a statement can be made on the matter.

REPORT:

In terms of future planning, it is proposed to provide for 7,300 sq. metres of community facilities in Clonburris SDZ that will consist of community centres, health and primary care services, as well as sports and leisure facilities which will be delivered on a phased basis.

There is ongoing assessment of the provision of community facilities as part of the delivery of new developments and the preparation of new Local Area Plans, which are supported by policy from the County Development Plan. As part of the preparation of the next County Development Plan, which is due to commence in June 2020, a social infrastructure assessment will be undertaken for each settlement area in the County and will identify future community facility requirements based on existing community services provided and future population projections.

The Community Development team along with the Sport Office support and work with many existing various clubs, groups and community centres. The following outlines the variety of groups and facilities the Community, Sport and Recreation department enage with.

The community developemnt team and sports offices will contine to work these and other new or exsiting community groups in the area.

In addition, construction of the new swimming pool at Lucan commenced in 2019 and is expected to be compelet in Q1 2021.
