QUESTION: Councillor Joanna Tuffy
To ask for the Council to give an update on all current and planned community centres in the Lucan Electoral Area and is there any land where the Council can build community centres or civic centres?
REPLY:
The residents of the Lucan Electoral area have the following list of Council owned Community Facilities which provide a range of social, recreational and Sporting opportunities:
- Earlsfort Community Centre
- Griffeen Youth Centre
- Adamstown Youth and Community Centre
- Ballyowen Community Centre
- Lucan Leisure Centre and adjoining Skate Park
Each of the above facilities offer space to community groups, residents associations, yoga, dancing, Pilates, slimming clubs etc to hire out as well as services specific to each centre such as:
- Earlsfort offers a preschool 5 days per week
- Griffeen is solely for youth services and they offer a Garda Diversion Programme
- Adamstown has sports hall and all-weather pitch catering for example cricket and badminton and outdoor and indoor football
- Ballyowen accommodates Liffey Sound Radio, Citizens Advice Centre, the Youth Service and a Counselling service
- Lucan Leisure Centre offers residents opportunity to engage in a range of sporting and recreational activities and offer groups the opportunity to hire space for a range of activities
In terms of new facilities for the area, construction works have also started on the new Lucan Swimming Pool.
In addition to Council owned facilities, there are also a wide range of schools, parish centres/properties and sporting organisations that offer services and facilities for local residents and groups in the Lucan area.
There have also been initial discussions with a grouping of a number of community organisations that have come together under the umbrella of the Esker Community Initiative and have preliminary proposals to develop a community hub for a number of community services.
