QUESTION: Councillor E. O'Brien

To ask the Chief Executive to provide an update on the construction of the Grand Canal Greenway between the 12th Lock in Lucan and Hazel Hatch.

REPLY:

The Grand Canal Greenway project is being led by Waterways Ireland in conjunction with the Local Authorities along the Canal from Grand Canal Dock to the River Shannon.  Members will be aware that the main element of the Greenway is in place in South Dublin County developed under a previous joint project with Waterways Ireland, Dublin City Council and the ESB. South Dublin County Council, by agreement with Kildare County Council, led the Part 8 process for the 12th Lock to Hazelhatch element of the project, the Part 8 for which was approved by elected members in May 2019. Unfortunately, the 12th Lock to Hazelhatch section of the project path was not funded under the Greenway programme. A number of meetings have been held with Waterways Ireland and it is hoped that a source of funding can be secured to enable this project to advance.
