QUESTION NO. 4

QUESTION: Councillor Carly Bailey

To ask the Chief Executive what power or authority the local authority has to intervene in situations where a tree planted on private property is causing a nuisance. This might relate for example to very overgrown tree(s) which are now encroaching in to the public space and restricting light, access and view (a significant safety issue, especially at night time) or where a tree is so big that it is is shedding leaves excessively onto public roads and public footpaths and/or into other private residents property.

REPLY:

If a tree or hedge is interfering with pedestrians or with signage then the Council can serve a tree/hedge cutting notice on the landowner. However Roads Dept. to not intervene on the issue of trees blocking views or light or shedding leaves on public/private areas.
