MOTION NO. 6

MOTION: Councillor L. O'Toole

In light of the latest damage done to the hockey pitch at Weston and it’s surrounding areas, also taken into account the newly installed running track at Lucan Harriers and the new Mulit wall ball due to be completed this committee requests the Chief Executive to introduce CCTV at this sports grounds to also include extra lighting at the main entrance as requested by club members. If a report could be included stating what CCTV funding would be required and compare it to the costs of damaged to both clubs and the council over the last number of years.

REPORT:

As part of the 2016 Public Realm Improvement Works Programme, 7 lighting columns were installed in the car park to improve visibility at night. The lighting column are positioned along the eastern side of the car park due to restrictions on the installation of columns under the power lines which are present on the western side of the car park. While it may not be possible to provide additional lighting in the vicinity of the main entrance, the matter will be examined in consultation with the Public Lighting Section to see if any improvement can be made.

In 2019 extensive pruning and thinning works were carried out to the shrubbery between the car park and the Adamstown Road (R120). These works increased visibility into and out of the car park and enhanced lighting by facilitating overspill from the adjacent street lighting. The hedge between the main entrance and the junction of the R120/L1030 was reduced in height in 2019 to coincide with the development of the ball wall/seating and water font. Both pruning work operations contribute to increasing the passive supervision of these areas.

CCTV in  public  places is subject to the General Data Protection Regulation and a Data Protection Impact Assessment in respect of installation  of CCTV at the proposed  location  would have to be done in the first instance by the Council before the matter could be further considered.
