MOTION NO. 3
MOTION: Councillor Carly Bailey
This local area committee calls for action to ensure full visibility of the new play space located beside the Perrystown Community Centre at the 8 Acres in Dublin 12 throughout the year.
This is necessary in order to deter any further anti-social behaviour taking place at this location.
Tall hedging and no lighting in this area has attracting unwanted attention from young people who of course have no where else to go. This is a secluded area currently and residents have complained of extensive noise issues, verbal abuse and items being thrown onto the street. Gardaí do not have the resources required to patrol regularly and further action is now required from SDCC to ensure this is a successful playspace for the area.
REPORT:
The Council's Public Realm Section will examine the issue raised regarding hedge cutting at Perrystown Community Centre and the Greentrees Park playspace. The hedge around the park has been cut recently and requires annual maintenance. It is not considered desirable to cut the hedge low and to expose the fence whichh has been erected to secure the playspace.
The construction of a new footpath around this part of Greentrees Park is on the Council's improvement works programme for this year. Work on this scheme is due to commence in the coming weeks and this will improve the passive supervision of the playspace and activity around it.
The issue raised with regard to the lack of public lighting in the area will also be examined. It is likely that the installation of public lighting at the playspace itself may lead to activity there going on late into the night, which would increase the likelihood of anti-social behaviour. The installation of public lighting on the new permiter path may on the other hand allow the use of the pathway and the passive supervision it will provide to continue later in the evening which would in turn be a deterrent to anti-social behaviour at the playspace.
