QUESTION NO. 3
QUESTION: Councillor Peter Kavanagh
"To ask the Chief Executive what was the area coverage, condition and location of native woodland in the Clondalkin LEA in (a) 2016 and (b) now/2019 in parks, urban areas and in uncultivated and natural areas, and what proportion of the overall coverage of the county this makes up?"
REPLY:
The UCD Tree Canopy study 2017 reported on the tree canopy cover in the Greater Dublin Region. South Dublin County with a total area of 22,350 ha. has a canopy cover of 3,872 ha. - 17% canopy cover. Native woodland would be included in this figure but not quantified separately.
Corkagh Park, one of the Council's largest parks in the region has approximately 10 ha of native woodland, the woodland areas are spread throughout the park. In addition, woodland areas have been planted prior to 2016 in the park. There is also an ongoing annual specimen tree planting programme for the park.
Data including coverage, condition and location of native woodland in private ownership is not available.
