QUESTION NO. 5
QUESTION: Councillor F. Timmons
"To ask the Chief Executive to get St. Brigid's Well inspected and to issue a report into the condition of the wall and to list and carry out any required work including getting the tree pruned and ivy growth around trimmed?"
REPLY:
A visual examination of the walls at St. Brigid’s Well was carried out. However, given the extent of ivy growth on the structures, it was not possible to fully ascertain the condition of the wall.
It was noted that the ash tree is showing signs of considerable dieback and decay. The build-up of organic matter around the base of the tree is not assisting matters and is likely to be contributing to the problem. The tree is in decline. However, given the important spiritual association that visitors have with the tree, it is proposed to retain the tree for as long as possible and to carry out some pruning to prolong its life.
To undertake a more thorough examination of the walls, it is proposed to cut back and remove ivy early in the new year. Any works required to the wall will be considered at this stage, having regard to the proximity of the structure to the Fonthill Road and the safety of staff working in the vicinity of live traffic.
