COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN/PALMERSTOWN/FONTHILL AREA COMMITTEE
Tuesday, October 22, 2019
MOTION NO. 15
MOTION: Councillor Shane Moynihan
That this Area Committee requests that residents associations in the Lucan/Palmerstown/Fonthill electoral area be directly involved and consulted with regard to the creation of biodiversity areas in their housing estates.
REPORT:
The Council will be happy to engage with any Residents Association or community group who indicate that they wish to be involved in identifying biodiversity areas in their housing estates. One possible means to be involved is through the Council's engagement with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan.
As part of this programme in 2019, areas of grass around the County were allowed to grow longer during this year's growing season. While these areas were predominantly located within public parks, some open spaces and grass verges along main roads or within some selected housing estates were also included.
The intention of this reduced mowing study was to encourage nectar-rich wildflowers to bloom, providing vital feeding for pollinating insects that are showing national population decreases due to habitat loss and climate change issues.
The approach was seen to be successful in many areas and the response from the public and from social media outlets was largely positive.
For the 2020 growing season, the involvement of local groups would be welcomed and groups would be encouraged to make contact early in the spring of 2020 when potential project locations are being assessed.
