COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN/PALMERSTOWN/FONTHILL AREA COMMITTEE
Tuesday, September 24, 2019
Motion No. 25
MOTION: Councillor L. O'Toole
Motion Transport Cycle tracks
This committee asks that the Chief Executive provides a report on the cycle tracks around Lucan. It was agreed at previous meetings that following the completion of the cycle tracks a survey would be carried out to show the ‘increase’ in the usage of the cycle tracks. To encourage school going children to cycle to school could a programme like ‘The walking Bus’ be introduced for cyclist.
REPORT:
Pedestrian and Cyclists Surveys were carried out by the NTA for the Willsbrook Cycle Scheme in 2017 and an excerpt from the National Transport Authority (NTA) report are attached detailing the findings. The report is showing that the number of pedestrians and cyclists since the completion of the last phase of Willsbrook Cycle Scheme has gone up by 60% and 19% respectively. No survey of the general wider Lucan Area was carried out, however the general trend is wherever new enhanced cycling and pedestrian facilities are provided the number of pedestrian and cyclists increase.
The SDCC Traffic Safety officer is planning to contact schools in the Lucan Area starting with schools in the vicinity of the Willsbrook Cycle Scheme with the view of co-ordinating and starting 'cycling and walking buses' in the area.
