MOTION NO. 15

MOTION: Councillor M. Ward

To ask the Chief Executive in consultation with residents to produce a comprehensive landscaping plan for the green space that runs from the Neilstown Road between 6 and 8 Moorfield Green to asthetically improve the area and to deal with the illegal dumping and littering in this area.

REPORT:

The layout of the housing in the vicinity of the green space between 6 and 8 Moorfield Green provides for very little passive supervision of the area. This is compounded by the irregular shape of the rear boundary wall of No 8, which juts out into the open space linking Moorfield Green with Neilstown Road. As a result, secluded areas exist on this walkway which provide convenient locations for people to dump.

In the past efforts have been made to improve this area by removing vegetation and reducing the secluded nature of the location. The removal of a large Lime tree in 2018 (due to its demise) along this walkway assisted significantly with opening up the area. Reintroducing vegetation through landscaping would only serve to enclose the area once again and negate previous works.

While the Public Realm Section is open to exploring options for this area and would welcome proposals from residents, it should be noted that introducing plants through landscaping is not considered an appropriate course of action.
