QUESTION: Councillor Carly Bailey
To ask the Chief Executive to outline the details of the Dublin 12 Laneway Cleaning Scheme including information on when the scheme was set up, what laneways it includes, whether the scheme is still in operation, the frequency of cleaning, whether that has changed over time, what the scheme was set up to achieve and to confirm whether the scheme is still achieving those aims.
REPLY:
Below is the report submitted to the Tallaght Area Committee in June 2013 on this matter, before the laneway cleaning programme commenced in July of that year. This cleaning programme is still in operation. During the period from 2014 to 2016 this cleaning programme was carried out by staff assigned to the Council's Roads Dept on the Gateway job activation scheme. These duties transferred back to the Public Realm Section after the winding down of the Gateway scheme. A recent inspection of the laneways in question found that while they are mostly clean the treatment and removal of weeds is required in many locations. This work will be carried out in the coming months. In some locations there is a problem with illegal dumping/disposal of waste some of which may have been carried out by local residents themselves. The litter warden section has been informed of this and asked to examine the matter.
' The laneways and pedestrian pathways proposed for inclusion in this pilot laneway cleaning schedule are as set out below. It is proposed that maintenance work to be carried out will include litter removal, removal of fly-tipped waste and the removal or spraying of weeds as required. Clean ups will be scheduled to take place on a twice yearly basis with one of these due to take place between July 1st and December 31st. Details of the pilot cleaning programme will be added to the maintenace schedule and will be available to the public on the Council's website in due course. '
