QUESTION NO. 16
QUESTION: Councillor F. Timmons
"To ask the Chief Executive for a details report into how South Dublin County Council proposes to deal with the congested traffic issues in Rathcoole and Newcastle and to consider this prior to building any more housing in these areas?
REPLY:
A Local Area Plan for Newcastle was adopted in 2012 following extensive public consultation. The LAP ensures that zoned lands are developed in a co-ordinated manner including a 6 year road plan in which the Main Street is a backbone of movement for the village and to provide alternative routes for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles in a manner that links each neighbourhood directly with the village core and between neighbourhoods.
Many measures have been implemented over the past number of years to improve traffic flows.
It is intended to investigate the possibility of doing a trial of a partial HGV restriction on the R120 between Newcastle and Rathcoole later this year subject to consultation with relevant stakeholders.
In the medium to longer term, the provision of an additional interchange on the N7 at Tootenhill and a link to the N81 at Boherboy as indicated in the County Development 2016 - 2022 will be of major benefit.
