MOTION NO. 10
MOTION: Councillor F. Timmons
That South Dublin County Council asks that Dublin City Council and the Taoiseach provide a state museum and Healing Garden for ALL those who endured the State and Church run institutions at the last remaining state owned Magdalene Laundry in Sean Mc Dermot Street and that both ensure that the site remains in State ownership , It should in an inclusive manner mark, remember and act as a place of healing for all those affected by the Magdalene Laundries, The Mother and Baby institutions, The Industrial Schools, The County institutions, The Bethany institution (All institutions registered legally as homes), the Vaccine Trials, Fostercare, Adoption, Illegal Adoption and by Church Clerical Abuse. They were all institutions run by the State and Church where awful abuses occurred.
We acknowledge that this site gives the whole state an opportunity and potential to come to terms with our dark and dreadful past history and offers a real chance to examine has the state learned from the huge wrongs done to so many in our past. It gives us a chance to have a place that could offer healing services to the survivors and those surviving, all those bereaved and those with living bereavement. to the families torn apart and all in the state , a chance for the nation to face up to our dark past and to move forward ensuring that we have learned from our past and that the awful abuse and neglect of the past is never repeated. We commit to writing to the Chief Ecectuive of Dublin City Council and the Taoiseach echoing the sentiments of this motion.
