QUESTION NO. 6

QUESTION: Councillor D. O'Donovan

"To ask the Chief Executive if Glyphosate is still in use by South Dublin County Council and if so, in what areas and for what purpose?"

REPLY:

Whilst the Council’s Public Realm staff have researched alternative weed control methods, the programme for examining various non chemical weed removal systems continues. The use of glyphosate is limited to locations where the eradication of perennial weeds is required and in particular this is on areas of hard landscaping and on roadside margins.  It is also essential to the Council's programme of eradication of invasive species such as Japanese Knotweed and this means that the use of glyphosate based weedkiller is unavoidable in certain park locations where these invasive species have been found.   A motion was passed by this Council in May 2017 whereby a ban on the use of glyphosate in Council owned parks, playgrounds and gardens was agreed and the intentions of this motion are being observed where this is possible.
