MOTION NO. 17

MOTION: Councillor L. O'Toole

"That this Area Committee commends all those involved in setting up the new junior park run in Griffeen Park including the relevant Departments in the Council that have supported and assisted this newly formed group which is mainly made up by volunteers. Any further assistance is greatly appreciated. To ask the Chief Executive for an update and to make comment."

REPORT:

SDCSP, in partnership with the Parks/ Public Realm section of SDCC, has financially supported the introduction of parkrun in SDC over the last few years. There are now 4 parkrun events in the county offering free, mass participation events to over 500 participants weekly. SDCSP has followed up the initial investment in bringing parkrun to the parks by providing a defibrillator in the TASC pavillion where the parkrun in Tymon is based. There are also plans to purchase a specialised running buggy that can be left in the facility so that a child with a disability can be brought around the course.

Following on from the adult parkruns, a more recent event is the junior parkrun, targeting younger children (7-14) over a shorter 2km distance. Again the management of this is all volunteer driven and we are very grateful to the members of the general public who give their time freely to organise, promote and manage these events. Griffeen junior parkrun will be the first junior parkrun in SDC. We are delighted that it is taking place and look forward to the junior events gaining the popularity that the adult parkruns get. SDCSP will be paying a one off fee of €1,500 to parkrun Ireland for the introduction of the junior parkrun and sees this as an excellent investment in the long term, sustainable healthy of our junior population.
