MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 8

MOTION: Councillor L. O'Toole

"That this Area Committee requests the Chief Executive examine the possibility of installing CCTV at the playground in Hermitage Park and to include any additional measures that can prevent further incidents in the park. There was a recent report of an incident/attack which involved park users being intimidated and injured, this has been reported to Lucan Gardaí."

REPORT:

The provision of CCTV is considered to form only one part of what needs to be an integrated approach involving other elements such as parental and community responsibility and measures such as zero tolerance policing. CCTV is not a panacea and while it is used to assist in the prevention and detection of crime, it is only provided in areas of demonstrated need, site suitability, and where it is likely to lead to identification of those engaged in illegal activity. While there are no current proposals to provide CCTV at Hermitage Park playground, the Public Realm Section is open to exploring alternative measures for the area and would welcome any suggestion from the elected members.

Residents and park users who encounter or witness disruptive or anti-social behaviour should not hesitate to report the matter to the Gardaí who have the powers to enforce the Criminal Justice and Public Order Acts.
