QUESTION NO. 2
QUESTION: Councillor D. O'Brien
"To ask the Chief Executive for a report on the issue of dumping in the Lucan LEA and for this report to include the total number of reports of dumping reported to the Council this year and the total number of reports last year?"
REPLY:
The issue of illegal dumping in the Lucan Area (and others) is of concern, and dumping at various location, including lanes and bottle banks, continues to be a major problem.
The Council continuously monitors these locations and significant investment has been made in recent years through the provision of CCTV and audio systems to monitor these locations, which are bearing results.
Total number of reports of illegal dumping in the Lucan area for 2017 was 387 and 2018 - 211 (1/1/2018 - 31/05/2018). These figures are inclusive of CCTV reports at Ballyowen Bottle Bank, Lucan.
Measures have been taken at locations such as the removal of textile banks and the reconfiguration remaining recycling banks. This has reduced secluded areas that were prone to dumping and improved the cleanliness.
Areas prone to high levels of illegal dumping activity are also included in the routine patrols undertaken by the Litter Warden Service and cleanups by public realm crews.
All instances of illegal dumping are investigated by the Warden Service and where possible (with evidence) Fixed Penalty Notices are issued. A total of 857 Fixed Penalty Notices as follows have been issued County wide: 556 in 2017 and 301 in 2018 (1/1/2018 - 31/05/2018).
Of interest - out of 556 FPN issued in 2017, 206 of these were for illegal dumping incidents at Ballyowen Bottle Bank and out of the 301 FPN issued up until 31/5/2018, 122 of these were for illegal dumping incidents at Ballyowen Bottle Bank.
