QUESTION NO. 12
QUESTION: Councillor W. Lavelle
"To ask the Chief Executive for a detailed update on the planned restoration of King John’s Bridge?"
REPLY:
The requirements under this project with regard to the existing sycamore roots has been the principal obstacle to allowing a straightforward repair/conservation work. There are concerns that the removal of the roots will completely undermine the structure of the arch, therefore specialised advice was required.
Specific advice has now been sought from a specialist botanist with regard to the necessary treatment of the existing large sycamore roots which have penetrated the original fabric of the bridge structure. An agreed method to carry out root treatment works has now been agreed. The continued engagement of a conservation engineer has also now been completed. The scope of services will include for the preparation of the necessary plans and laser survey drawings of the bridge and perimeter of the bridge. A programme of works and timeframe is currently been drawn up for agreement between the Consultant Conservation Engineer and Councils Architectural Conservation Officer in order to progress this project.
