MEETING OF CLONDALKIN AREA COMMITTEE

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

MOTION NO.  20

MOTION: Councillor B. Bonner

"That this committee shares the concern of the Friends of the Camac environmental group in relation to the works carried out on the Camac in Clondalkin Park, particularly in the section from the bridge at St John's Wood ( the Sandy Hole) to the bridge at the Tennis Courts.

Were the works carried out in consultation with the Biodiversity / Heritage Officer?

Were the works carried out with the Water Framework Objectives in mind to ensure no deterioration in water quality ?

Did the works follow the best practice guidelines as laid out in the Water Framework Objectives?"

REPORT:

Clearing works are carried out on an as required basis on the rivers in the county, this is in order to prevent flooding due to blocked screens. This work involves the removal of fallen debris and rubbish from the river bank, particularly upstream of our critical screens. If this material is not removed, it will moves down stream at times of flood flow in the river, blocking the screen and causing local flooding.

While this work is required, we do minimise the amount of work being done, it is monitored to ensure that the impact on the river bank is minimised. SDCC endeavour to protect the natural cover on the river bank as much as possible in order not to have a negative effect on the water quality and the Water Framework Objectives or on fish and wild life.

The work is carried in accordance with the Office of Public Works (OPW) and Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) guidelines as the reference document for this type of work.
