QUESTION NO. 1
QUESTION: Councillor G. O'Connell
"To ask the Chief Executive to please supply information on how often the quality of the water in the Glenaulin Park stream is tested and include in the report the quality of the water over the last six months of 2017 and if he is satisfied with the quality?"
REPLY:
The Glenaulin Stream is not on the EPA Operational Monitoring list under the Water Framework Directive, therefore it is not routinely sampled. However SDCC did inspect the stream six times between 21 November 2016 and 4 January 2017. On one of these inspections a slight odour and discolouration was observed. The stream was also sampled four times between 5 January 2017 and 20 January 2017 and showed results ranging from moderate to poor water quality which is not unusual for a piped urban stream of its type, as the stream is affected by urban surface water discharge.
While the stream is not designated for EPA Operational Monitoring under the Water Framework Directive it was again sampled on 19 January 2018 for the purpose of comparison with last year’s results and the Council awaits results from the laboratory for this sample.
The River Dodder has been prioritised for inspection and water quality improvement work in the River Basin Management plan 2018 to 2021 and all other rivers and streams, including the Glenaulin, will be considered for specific improvement work in the next cycle of the River Basin Management Plan.
