QUESTION NO.6

QUESTION: Councillor E. Murphy

"To ask the Chief Executive can the Council please confirm the species and type of tree that was planted in Rathfarnham Wood as part of the Tree Planting Programme?"

REPLY:

"The trees recently planted in Rathfarnham Wood are Corylus colurna, commonly known as Turkish hazel.  They have an attractive, pyramidal shape with soft, hairy, rich green leaves. The bark is pale grey-buff, with a thick, corky texture giving the tree an interesting winter character.   In late winter to early spring, showy yellow catkins are produced.  Corylus colurna is in common use for street tree planting as it is very tolerant of the constraints and challenges of the urban growing environment."
