QUESTION NO. 4

QUESTION: Councillor P. Gogarty

"To ask the Chief Executive for an update on the repair of footpaths at Glenaulin Park, Palmerstown and the relocation of seating (due to antisocial behaviour) previously requested by this Councillor?"

REPLY:

An order has been issued for the repair of paths in Glenaulin Park. Works will be undertaken early in the New Year when ground conditions are suitable. A total of 672 square meters will be resurfaced at 14 different locations in the park. The areas vary in size and range from 3 square meters up to 190 square meters.

The provision of seating in Glenaulin Park has been attempted on a number of occasions in the past. Early seat installations were removed due to vandalism and antisocial activities. The last of these were removed in 2011 on the east boundary of the park near Rossaveal Court to deter loitering at night. Around that time, more vandal resistant stone benches were installed in an attempt to retain some seating for bona fide park users that would withstand the rigours of abuse and vandalism. Regrettably, these benches have also been systematically vandalised beyond repair and have, in the interests of public safety, been removed.

The bench which is situated beside the fence at Glenaulin Green has also suffered from antisocial activities in recent times. An examination of the park was undertaken to see if the bench could be relocated within the park. Regrettably it has not been not possible to identify any suitable locations and the only alternative to address the antisocial activities referred to in the question is to remove the bench. Arrangements will be made to have the bench removed.
