QUESTION NO. 21

QUESTION: Councillor D. O'Brien

"To ask the Chief Executive for a report on the Council's plans for the Lucan Leisure Centre and for this report to include;

What plans do SDCC have for the centre when the new swimming pool is built?
Will the Council keep maintaining the centre as the roof needs to be repaired and there has been a delay in repairing broken windows?
I believe the Karate club have had to cancel classes due to the poor condition of the roof."

REPLY:

The Council has carried out major works on the Centre over the last 4 years. These included an energy retrofit and the installation of a new heating system. In addition major repairs have been carried out to the roof system and the most recent work has addressed the leaking problem.

A new CCTV system was installed last year, however this has not addressed the anti-social activity which has lead to the continuous breaking of windows. A number of windows have had to be replaced on several occassions during the year. This process takes several site visits as some of the window units are positioned in the hall area and this requires working at height with hoist equipment. For safety reasons, areas within the danger zone have to be isolated to ensure that slivers of glass from the window frames do not fall out and cause harm. The Centre Management are working closely with the Gardaí to resolve this issue.

The Centre will form an integrated part of the new campus and will complement the new leisure centre. This Council is committed to supporting the many local organisations that avail of these facilities.
