MOTION NO.5

MOTION: Councillor E. Fanning

Following the example set by Dublin City Council, this Council will fly the flag of Palestine over County Hall for a month in solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine.

REPORT:

The following is a summary of the existing practice for flags in SDCC:

In general, the South Dublin County, Dublin County and National Flags are flown outside County Hall, Tallaght and Civic Offices, Clondalkin for special occasions.

The National Flag is also flown on Council Meeting Days in County Hall, Tallaght, as well as St. Patrick’s Day and in advance of Irish national teams participating in international sporting occasions such as the World Cup, European Championship and Olympic Games.

The Council occasionally receives requests from Central Government Departments to fly the National Flag at half-mast as a mark of respect for victims of national or international tragedies.

The Dublin County Flag is flown in advance of the Dublin Teams participating in the All Ireland Championships.

The European flag is flown on occasions where there is a representative of the European Union visiting or where there is a function connected to a project which has received funding from the European Union.

Where there is a visiting dignitary the national flag of the dignitary is flown.

If the Motion is passed the Council will fly the flag of Palestine at County Hall for a Month.
