MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE

Monday, April 24, 2017

MOTION NO. 4

MOTION: Councillor M. Duff

"That this Area Committee, recognizing the importance of tourism and the economic potential of the Dublin Mountains for Tallaght as the County Town and in recognition of Tallaght being the gateway to the Mountains, calls on the Chief Executive to rename Sean Walsh Park "Gateway Park"."

REPORT:

The Council's Policy on Infrastructure Naming, Provision of Memorials and Plaques was adopted by the Council at the March 2017 Council Meeting.

This policy applies to Infrastructure Assets under the Council’s control and outlines that the naming of Infrastructure Assets may arise either in the case of existing significant unnamed assets at the instigation of Council or the community, or as a result of new assets being constructed or dedicated as part of Council capital works programmes.

It further outlines that in general, only new structures or facilities will be considered for commemorative naming as existing buildings and structures may already have a name associated with them and that proposals for naming of Infrastructure will be validated by the relevant Director of Services before referral to an All-Party Infrastructure Naming Committee which will be chaired by the Mayor.   This All-Party Infrastructure Naming Committee has not yet convened to consider a naming proposal.

It is recommended that this facility NOT be renamed and it is noted that a similar type motion was submitted in March 2015 then calling for the renaming of Sean Walsh Park as "Independence Park" to honour and commemorate those citizens of Tallaght and other areas of our County who participated in the 1916 Rising and the War of Independence.
