MOTION NO. 8

MOTION: Councillor B. Bonner

"This committee commends the great work done by the Council in partnership with Clondalkin Tidy Towns on the 1916 Memorial Garden.  It requests that this work be complemented by ensuring that proper falg ploes and plinth be installed, and that suitable lighting be installed to highlight this beautiful monument.

In tandem with this, could the planting on the Fonthill Road from it's junction with Boot Road be upgraded, with the shrubs under the wall of the St Brigids Road houses being replaced.  This will be an important walkway to the memorial garden from the village and needs to be upgraded. Similarly, the planting on the walkway up to St Brigid's Well needs to be replaced so that this whole historic quarter will be upgraded".

REPORT:

The Clondalkin Tidy Towns Group received a grant from the Council's Commemorations Fund and from the Community Services for development of the Memorial Garden at Newlands.  Similarly, Public Realm also arranged for extensive tree pruning at the site as part of the construction process.

It was identified (at design stage) that there was insufficient funding available to install lights and a flagpole, and the project was delivered, as is, through the funding mechanisms available.  No further funding has since been identified.

It should also be noted that the Council's Commemorations Fund paid for the installation of Flag Poles at the Civic Offices in Clondalkin in the centre of the village as part of the 1916 celebrations.

Public Lighting, in consultation with Public Realm, will examine the potential for cost of provision of additional lighting at this location.

A proposal to undertake landscape works on the Fonthill Road verge between Boot Road and Caldbeck Way has been listed on the 2017 Public Realm Improvement Works Programme.  This is included in Headed Item 6.
