QUESTION NO. 6
QUESTION: Councillor M. Ward
“To ask the Manager to detail the criteria or policy used by the Council for deciding whether to pay compensation to Council tenants or private home owners to cover the cost of damage to houses when the damage is caused by weather or water related flooding or leaks from within the household water system.”
REPLY:
The payment of compensation to tenants or private house owners would not be considered unless the Council was liable for payment due to some action undertaken by us that caused the damage in question.
If a tenants house was damaged by leaks or flooding the Council would repair it. We may seek to recover costs if the leak was as a result of actions taken by the tenant that caused the leak. The repair would include redecorating the area damaged by the leak or flood
Any resultant damage to contents within the house would be a matter for the tenant to take up with their insurance company.
However as each case may well differ all cases are dealth with on their own merits.
