MOTION NO. 10

MOTION: Councillor P. Foley

"As Dodder Valley Park is a regional park, could the proposed play space for Mount Carmel Park in 2017 be reviewed in terms of budget, timeline and scale. Can the proposed play space be upgraded to a regional playground."

REPORT:

"Mount Carmel has been included in the play space programme agreed by Council for 2014-2018. The recent interim review has programmed the play space at Mount Carmel for 2017, and a budget has been allocated for that play space in the capital programme for 2017.

The play space programme has been proposed as a five year programme aimed to address the deficiency of play opportunities in the immediate environment of children’s homes. It is an innovative programme based on encouraging imaginative, constructive and social play. The playspaces are designed to adapt to the particular place where they are implemented. They provide a space and a setting for play (rather than focus on equipment for children to play with); are located where children live, with the emphasis on natural playspaces; which focus on the type of play that is most important to younger children.

Provision has been made in the 2017 budget for a teenager facility study; this will inform the provision of recreational and other facilities for older children and may include such proposals as larger play items etc. There is also provision to progress a parks and open space strategy in 2017. This is a wider strategy document that will inform and plan for the future provision of recreational amenities within the county and make recommendations in that regard. It will include recommendations for facilities within existing regional parks."
