SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 19
MOTION: Councillor L. O'Toole
Cathaoirleach's Business
"This committee acknowledges that additional bins that have been introduced gradually to Lucan & Palmerston. These bins have proved successful to date as they are being used to their full capacity. However the full use has led to the bins being over filled quite regularly and therefore additional cleansing/emptying would need to be introduced. Following this the committee asks if the Chief Executive would consider the introduction of the new innovative “Big Belly” bins for reasons outlined in recent articles such as: “American-manufactured “Big Belly” bins are fitted with solar-powered waste compactors which crush rubbish to increase the capacity of the bin by six to eight times that of a traditional litter bin. Sensors in the bin detect when it’s full and send a message to council staff letting them know the bin needs to be emptied.”
REPORT:
As committed to in the Litter Management Plan - 2016 Action Plan (See Action 17) a review of litter bin provision is currently taking place, having regard to the Litter Bin Replacement Policy (See Appendix 7).
This review will also take cognisance of the potential to pilot Big Belly Bin(s) in appropriate locations, and subject to resources available.
