COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE

QUESTION NO. 20
QUESTION: Councillor D. Richardson
"To ask the Chief Executive to provide a wall in the Tallaght area for graffiti? I believe this would stop other parts of Tallaght being tagged on a regular basis. I have seen this done in other Countries and it did cut down the amount of graffiti in the area."
REPLY:
"It is an objective of the Council's Corporate Plan and Litter Management Plan 2015-2019 (LMP) to improve the aesthetic appearance of the County, and to address the negative impact of litter (including graffiti) which is an illegal and anti-social activity that can create a negative impression of an area.
The Council is committed to working with communities and others to remedy defacement and Action 30 of the LMP outlines as follows: "to examine potential for a Street Art Graffiti scheme"."
An initial project which proposed to engage local artists to create an image on a local sports container to establish if this would assist towards addressing the issue of graffiti proved difficult to advance as no responses to the call were received.
Following on from this outcome, we are currently working with Tallaght Community Arts (TCA) to establish if an alternative approach to the project would yield a better response. Already, as part of these early discussions, it has been established that this will require time.
In addition, through TCA's previous engagement in community art projects, the importance of a collaborative approach cannot be underestimated, and this will involve community engagement and agreement, management and ownership of the project.
Members will be updated with progress.
