MOTION NO. 1
MOTION: Councillor J. Graham
Cathaoirleach's Business
"That this committee agrees that the scope of the play space programme is amended and widened to accommodate twelve year olds plus and to include the installation of exercise equipment."
REPORT:
There has been some discussion concerning the Play Space programme in relation to the provision of facilities for the older age groups and in particular for Teenagers. Very often teenagers will congregate in or near play spaces and playgrounds.. Suggestions have been made concerning the provision of Multi Use Games Areas, so called “hang out” areas or more advanced play areas for teenagers in parks and open spaces that have play spaces in order to provide for the needs of these teenagers. A discussion on this is taking place and it may be that this discussion should also include consultation with the teenagers themselves.
In relation to the Exercise Equipment: this equipment is for older teenagers and adults and does not form part of the Play Space programme. There has been some discussion at the South Dublin Sports Partnership concerning the Exercise Equipment currently installed and the effectiveness of the equipment in terms of the usage that it gets. Before any additional equipment is installed it would be advisable to survey the existing usage.
