MOTION NO. 4

MOTION: Councillor K. Mahon

"That this Area Committee asks the Chief Executive that given recent reports of needles being found in local playing amenities the Council undertakes to maintain regular cleaning of all local play spaces, ensures that staff are trained to adequately deal with any dangerous waste material found and that any material found in public areas are reported to the Gardai and to local Drugs Task forces to ensure safety and monitoring of potential service requirements in the area."

REPORT:

All play grounds and play spaces in the County are inspected regularly and any maintenance that is identified as necessary during those inspections is arranged as required.  All such areas are also included on the Public Realm Section's cleaning and grass cutting schedules.  All public realm operational staff are trained in needlestick awareness and in the procedures for the safe removal of needles.  The Council maintains a centralised system for the recording of needle finds and this is maintained by the health and safety adviser.  At present such finds are not notified to the Gardai or local Drugs Task Force, however this can be arranged if required.
