COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF LUCAN AREA COMMITTEE
Tuesday, May 24, 2016
HEADED ITEM NO. 15
CASTLE ROAD, BALLYOWEN.
The junctions at Grangecastle Road/Castle Road/Ballyowen Lane have been extensively monitored using the Council CCTV located at this location. The junctions operate vehicle actuation under MOVA.
The dominating factor is traffic flow on the Grangecastle Road. This is the major road and as such during peak hours receives the bulk of the available green time. The remainder is shared between both side road movements.
However, at the Castle Road/Ballyowen Lane junction the main road is Castle Road with Ballyowen Lane being the side road. This can result in situations whereby the signals to Castle Road are green at Ballyowen Lane for longer periods than they are green to Castle Road at Grangecastle Road.
At peak times this can result in queuing on the side roads. In addition there is a peak in the afternoon where the demands on Castle Road increase greatly. This is presumably school related.
The situation complained of, namely that the exit from the shopping centre (Ballyowen Lane) dominates over Castle Road for long periods was not observed.
