MOTION NO. 5

MOTION: Councillor D. Richardson

That this Area Committee provide more signs on roads that lead into Tallaght. We have a sign coming off the Glenview roundabout with Tallaght on it, I believe we should have more of these signs on different roads into Tallaght and on the way out. There could be an option for the signs to be sponsored by business so there is no cost to the Council.

REPORT:

The Council recently implemented a pilot signage project in Tallaght, aimed at wayfinding and heritage. This existing pilot was been well recieved but does not include signs and panels of a scale aimed at vehicular traffic. The Council is currently examining provision of 'Welcome Signs' for each of the Villages. A crucial road safety and aesthetic consideration in the implementation of a signage scheme is the necessity to provide the signage without creating a proliferation of signage - directional or otherwise, so as to clutter the appearance of streetscapes. This will have to be a consideration if further directional / welcome signs are commissioned.

The Council has engaged a Tourism Marketing company. The first phase of the marketing project over the next 10 weeks will include draft logos and brand for the County as a tourism destination. It is proposed that they will present to the Tourism Working Group in early April to initiate and that early stage logos will be developed and presented at the end of the 10 week period.

It might therefore be premature for the Council to commission the design and installation of further signage and branding without the marketing logos etc being approved and finalised. Its imperative that welcome signage be of a consistent look and feel in the interest of enhancing the cohesion of the County and Village's identity, and this is connected to the work of the marketing company, which, as indicated, has started and is ongoing.
