MOTION NO. 9

MOTION: Councillor E. O'Brien

"To ask the Chief Executive to take the following steps to protect the safety of residents using the footbridge over the N4 between Esker Lane and Cherbury Park estate in light of recent criminal activity in the area;

1. Cut back all hedgerows, bushes and foliage at the foot of the bridge at both sides of the bridge

2.Increase the public lighting in the area

3. Give due consideration to CCTV at an appropriate location along the route in question

4. Continue to liaise with An Garda Siochana to ensure the County Council is doing all possible to discourage criminal behaviour in this area?"

REPORT:

  1. Works have commenced on cutting back vegetation at this location. It is proposed to cut back vegetation on both sides of the footbridge during February.
  2. There are two lighting columns on either side of the N4 Bridge. The Public Realm Section will liaise with the Public Lighting Section in relation to the existing lighting with a view to assessing the necessity to upgrade it.
  3. It is considered that the above actions should assist to address any anti-social/criminal behaviour that may be occurring in the area. The request to provide CCTV will be considered on foot of further details regarding the type of activities taking place at the bridge.
  4. The County Council would encourage all residents to report to the Gardaí any criminal activities that they may encounter in their area. The Council does liaise regularly with An Garda Síochána in relation to specific issues and will continue to do so.
