QUESTION NO. 2

QUESTION: Councillor D. Richardson

"To ask the Chief Executive can the Council provide more rubbish bins outside of The Square Shopping Centre to prevent litter being thrown around by shoppers coming from The Square. Residents living around The Square have contacted me regarding this as people leave The Square by foot, some have food from fast food take-aways and throw it on the ground?"

REPLY:

In accordance with the Litter Pollution Act the prime responsibility for implementing litter control measures in the vicinity of the Square shopping centre lies with the management of the centre itself. The provision of litter bins around the perimeter of the Square will be examined in conjunction with the Council's litter enforcement section to determine if the current provision is adequate, and the matter will be raised with Management of the Square Centre if this is considered to be necessary. The provision of litter bins by the Council in areas adjoining the Square will also be examined to determine if the current provision is adequate.  If there are areas identified which are not adequately provided for at present then additional litter bins will be installed to address those issues.
