HEADED ITEM NO. 13
Griffeen – Traffic Issues
Discussions have been held with Dublin Bus concerning the possibility of alterations to the exiting bus stops. Dublin Bus are not in favour of any alterations as it is felt that these would have a negative impact of the bus service. Any reduction in the efficiency of the bus service would have a negative impact on the junction.
The construction of an additional lane on Griffeen exiting onto the Grangecastle Rd would not be viable with major alterations to the bus stop.
Replacement of the roundabout with traffic signals could only be of benefit to vehicle if a strict link were installed to the main junction. This would result in serious delays to pedestrians. It should be noted that large numbers of young pedestrians cross at this location daily.
Signal timings were altered late in 2015 to give greater priority to the Griffeen exit between 08:30 and 09:30. This has resulted in an increase in the volume of traffic exiting during this period. The peak queuing times appear to have decreased as a result.
The peak hour demands on the junction, especially during the morning peak at school times, are greater than the capacity of the junction. A meaningful reducing in traffic congestion can only be achieved in terms of modal shift which is in line with both Council and Government policy. As such the council will continue to encourage and support a move to public transport, cycling and walking as an alternative to private vehicles where such change is possible especially for shorter local journeys.
