COMHAIRLE CONTAE ÁTHA CLIATH THEAS
SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
MEETING OF TALLAGHT AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 9
MOTION: Councillor M. Duff
That this Committee calls on the Chief Executive to introduce an increased road and footpath sweeping programme, especially during October and November, to assist in the removal of fallen leaves, which pose a trip/slip hazard to pedestrians and clog up surface water drains.
REPORT:
The leaf removal arrangements which are in place under the road sweeping contract which is held currently by Oxigen Environmental Ltd provide for removal of leaves from all areas (main roads, housing estates and industrial estates) which are covered by the contract during the period September 1st to January 31st. This service is to be provided in conjunction with the normal road sweeping and gulley cleaning contract in such a way that the normal services are not affected. At present the contractor has a total of three additional large suction road sweepers working on leaf removal and these are additional to the normal plant requirements of the road sweeping and gulley cleaning service.
The Council will be tendering in the near future to procure a new road sweeping contract. It is intended that the requirements of a new contract with regard to leaf removal will be improved with regard to response times and the assignment of adequate resources to ensure that response times are acceptable.
