QUESTION NO. 14

QUESTION: Councillor B. Leech

"To ask the Chief Executive, on the Development Plan for the Jobstown Park there are railings on the Cheeverstown Road side of the Plan. Can you establish to me if this fence will be continued around the rest of the perimeter wall which includes Glenshane and the length of the Fortunestown Way down to the Tallaght Leisure Centre?"

REPLY:

When Jobstown Park was originally laid out in the 1980's, a wall and railing was provided around the perimeter of the park. However, the entire length of this boundary was subject to sustained vandalism and damage and the park was subject to high levels of anti-social behaviour.

In light of the above, a decision was taken in the 1990's to completely remove the original wall and railing and replace it with the current concrete stub wall. This measure resulted in significant visual and public safety improvements, reductions in anti-social behaviour and also a reduction in ongoing maintenance costs. It also enabled An Garda Síochána to police the park more effectively.

In recent years, the construction of the Outer Ring Road and the associated upgrade of Cheeverstown and Cookstown Roads was undertaken by the Council. As a result of the upgrade of these roads, road safety measures were required and the road construction included for the provision of the current boundary wall and railings, as well as pedestrian crossing facilities, along the Outer Ring Road frontage of both Jobstown Park and Butler McGee Park.

There are no proposals to provide this type of boundary treatment around the other boundaries of Jobstown Park.
