QUESTION NO. 9
QUESTION: Councillor B. Bonner
"To ask the Chief Executive if there was a reduction in bonfire activity in the Clondalkin area over Hallowe'en? The great efforts made by council staff to clear bonfire material all week in the area is noted and very much appreciated. Staff worked right up to nighfall on Hallowe'en and many residents have asked me to convey their thanks.
When can the bonfire remains be cleaned up? In spite of the best efforts of our crews there were some very destructive bonfires. The one outside the school at St Bernadette's damaged the greens and destroyed the beautiful trees which were planted by the council with the assistance of the children in the school."
REPLY:
The Councillor's remarks are appreciated and will be passed on to the staff involved. To date, 113 bonfires have been mapped in the Clondalkin LEA. While the majority of the bonfires in the area have been mapped, this figure is expected to increase slightly as the bonfire mapping is completed.
As it currently stands, there appears to be a reduction of a little over 10% in bonfires for the Clondalkin LEA in 2015, as compared to 2014 when 130 bonfires were recorded. It is considered that the combined efforts by the Council to counter bonfires, through a range of measures including the removal of bonfire material, have contributed to the apparent reduction in bonfires this year.
The clean-up operation commenced on the week beginning 3rd November and is scheduled to continue until Friday 20th November.
