MOTION NO. 2

MOTION: Councillor B. Bonner

"This committee commends the work of the committee of the Clondalkin Horticultural Show who worked tirelessly to ensure that the show on October 4th was a huge success.  It also recognises the excellent work of our heritage officer and the other council staff who worked with the committee over the last year.  This committee recommends that support would continue to be given to ensure that this show becomes an annual event."

REPORT:

From the 1960's to the 1990's adults and children of the Clondalkin Area showcased their talents at the local horticultural Show. This show was organised by Clondalkin ICA. The Competition took place every year in the Assembly Hall, Scoil Mhuire. It drew people from the locality together and the competition was intense to see who grew the biggest and best and what sponge and jams tasted the nicest? For the children, many will remember the minature garden in the biscuit tin.

After a break of almost 30 years, October 4th 2015 saw the rebirth of the show with 7 main categories, (baking, crafts, produce, preserves, floral, art and photography). There were 63 sub categories. There is a wonderful tradition of crafting within Clondalkin and its surrounds and this was displayed with the excellent support that the Community gave to this event in Aras Chronain. Over 200 enteries were submitted from many different individuals and groups. The local schools in the area got on board and produced some fantastic art work and baking along with produce that was grown in their school gardens.

The Committee is made up of Local Women from the Clondalkin area and they worked very hard on making this event a success. The committee met monthly in Bewleys Hotel to co-ordinate all issues and supplied information stands in both the Clondalkin and Lucan Festivals to give out information and promote the event. The Council both financially and through the local community services team supported the committee in their work and have committed to continuing to give on-going support to this group.

If the Motion is passed the views and congratulations of the Area Committee will be made known to the Committee.
